About our foodbank

Here is an introduction to our project.

Brecon foodbank was started in 2014 by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in our local area. Initially it was based in Lion Street but in October 2015 we moved to the St. Johnn’s Family Centre in Pendre. The Foodbank operates in the hall, so clients can come and discuss their needs in a warm, friendly environment, and have a drink and a biscuit while they discuss their needs their food bags are being packed, and they have the chance to select any toiletries they need, choose ‘help yourself’ items such as seasonal produce from local growers, slightly outdated non-perishable food and items not on our regular ‘packing lists’ that have been donated. There often an adviser from one of our many referral agencies present to help any who need it.

In March 2023 we opened a satellite Foodbank in Hay on Wye, which is open each Friday at the same time as our Brecon Foodbank.

We work in partnership with many local agencies (from whom clients need our free vouchers in order to get food) such as Housing, Brecon Mind, Brecon Advice Centre, and Severn Wye Energy so as to cover hopefully all who need us. We have clients from the surrounding area too, such as Hay, Talgarth, Crickhowell, and Sennybridge. We cover the area up to the boundary of the neighbouring Foodbanks.

We also work with local schools, churches, community groups and some businesses in collecting food and money to enable us to operate, and many local schools and some churches are also referral agencies.
